Yesterday, 4 December 2013 Pietermaritzburg Regional Court sentenced a 35-year-old man to 25 years imprisonment for raping his 10-year-old daughter. On 5 January 2013 the victim was sitting on her grandmother’s bedroom in their Mountain Rise home when her father entered and closed the door. The accused allegedly raped her and threatened the victim not to tell anyone about the incident.
On 19 January 2013 the accused told the victim that he wanted to rape her again. The victim allegedly told her grandmother not to leave her alone until her mother arrived. On the same date the victim informed her mother about the rape and the case was reported at Mountain Rise Police Station. The docket was then transferred to Pietermaritzburg Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation. After a painstaking investigation the accused was arrested and charged with rape.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the Pietermaritzburg FCS for successfully securing the conviction and sentence of the accused. ”This conviction will send a strong message to other criminals who targeted vulnerable women and children as we are celebrating 16 Days of No Violence against Women and Children,” she said.
