Newborn baby found in pit toilet, mother to appear soon

A 30-year-old black mother is expected to appear in the Tseseng Magistrates’s Court in Phuthaditjaba on a charge of attempted murder of her newborn baby.

Free State police spokesperson, Mmako Mophiring, says it is alleged the mother of three gave birth in a pit toilet. After giving birth to a baby girl she left her inside the toilet and walked away.

Mophiring says the husband was apparently not aware of the pregnancy. He was not at home during the incident and upon arrival at home he went to the toilet only to discover the crying baby.

Mother and child are in a stable condition in the Mofumadi Manapo Mopeli Regional Hospital in Phuthaditjaba.

The mother is under police guard and will appear in court as soon as she has recovered completely.
