Police investigated for shooting of illegal miners

Gauteng police are investigating after police officers shot and wounded two alleged illegal miners.

They were among 11 men arrested when police raided the RDP house from which they were operating in Daveyton near Benoni, east of Johannesburg. The two wounded men are in hospital under police guard.

The police’s Kay Makhubele says the men drew weapons when confronted and the police then opened fire. It was later found that the guns pointed at the police were toy guns.

“As the police were in operation. We will investigate the circumstances of the incident,” says Makhubele.

The men were found in possession of equipment which is used to operate underground and gold sand was found in bags in the house.

They are going to appear at Benoni Magistrate’s Court within 48 hours.
