Battle lines drawn for Gauteng Afrikaans schools

The Gauteng Education Department’s decision to change single-medium Afrikaans schools into parallel-medium schools will be challenged in the Johannesburg High Court.

The Federation of Governing Bodies of South African Schools are calling for the preservation of Afrikaans as a language of instruction.

But Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said he wants to address overcrowding in the province’s classrooms, which will affect over 124 schools.

Lesufi slammed resistance to the plan as “racially motivated”, because most English speakers are black.
