Black S. African gets life sentence for baby rape

The South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on Thursday handed down a life sentence to a 24-year old black man convicted of raping a 23-month old baby.

DNA evidence linked Lucky Nkoana to the crime. He had however pleaded not guilty.

His life sentence will run concurrently with a two years and six months imprisonment.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Velekhaya Ngobozi said Nkoana lacked remorse throughout the trial.

“The NPA welcomes the sentence and we hope that the sentence will serve as a deterrent to like-minded people.”

Baby and infant rape is a common occurrence in South Africa. Some black men believe that intercourse with virgins and children will cure them of HIV infection.
