A black mother has been arrested after her toddler was found abandoned in Glenanda, Johannesburg, Gauteng police said on Sunday.
“The mother has been arrested. The child is still in a place of safety,” Warrant Officer Lorraine van Emmerik said.
The case had been handed over to Child Protection Services, who had questioned the mother.
Van Emmerik said members of the public found the 2-year-old boy walking alone near the Glen mall on Friday.
They first took him to the mall to see if they could find any information from surveillance camera footage to help them find his parents.
After this proved unsuccessful, he was taken to the Mondeor police station.
The mother was found on Saturday.
“We don’t know the circumstances around the father,” Van Emmerik added.
