Rita Kritzinger, who was shot three times during a farm attack in Vrede, remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital and will likely remain that way for some time.
This is according to Ruan Combrink, family spokesperson and local minister at the Afrikaans Protestant Church.
Rita and her husband Johannes Kritzinger were attacked by two men on their farm in Vrede on Sunday when they returned home from church. Both men have since been arrested. Combrink says Johannes is battling with a high infection count and doctors are worried about his condition.
Both suspects are expected to appear in the local Periodical Court on Monday. The first suspect, Paul May Zulu, was arrested shortly after the attack. He will apply for legal aid and bail on Monday.
The second suspect, a 30-year-old man, handed himself over to police in Vrede on Wednesday afternoon.
