Girl poisoned, strangled for revenge

A four-year-old black girl has been poisoned and strangled, and her body hidden in the base of a bed by her black mother’s black boyfriend in Lawley, south of Joburg.

Asinia Mashaba’s body was found on Thursday morning after the man confessed to the police.

His RDP house is just across the dirt road from where the girl lived in a shack with her mother and six-year-old sister.

The distraught mother, Berta Mashaba, 21, said her boyfriend had gone to Giyani in Limpopo to visit his sick mother. “His mom passed away and he called and said ‘You’re a witch, you killed my mother’,” she said.

The black man, 24, returned to Lawley on Monday.

“After he came back, he accused me of destroying his DVD player.”

When Mashaba and her friends went to the man’s house to sort out the issue, he allegedly locked her in the house and tried to stab her with a screwdriver.

“He said: ‘Today I want to kill you because you killed my mother’.” A resident broke into the house through a window and stopped him. Mashaba reported her boyfriend’s attack to the Ennerdale police.

But on Wednesday he allegedly got his revenge.

He sent Mashaba’s eldest daughter and a neighbour’s child to the shops to buy him airtime. They had been in the care of Mashaba’s sister.

“When the older ones came back, the younger one was sleeping in the man’s bed, closed up in blankets. He sent them away again to buy snacks. When they came back the child was gone.”

Mashaba rushed home when she heard the news, and the family and neighbours searched frantically for Asinia.

“He even beat (up a) lady when she wanted to search the ceiling of his RDP house.”

When Mashaba reported Asinia missing, the police searched his house and a nearby field. They even slept outside his house on Wednesday night.

“This morning (the police) asked (him about it) again and he confessed. He gave the child food but the food was poisoned. After that he strangled her and hid the child under the mattress in the base of the bed.”
